Jersey Archive

u plays key role in nravelling the past.

Jersey Heritage opened the Jersey Archive in 2000 as a centre for individuals from within the local community and around the world to come and use the unique historic records of the Island for their research. Since opening Jersey Archive has helped many thousands of individuals start on their personal quests to find out more about their family’s roots.

“ Access to records at the Archive is free of

charge but new readers will have to register – this is a simple 10 minute process.

The past 10 years have seen a huge growth in the worldwide study of family history. Individuals are now interested in finding out more about their past, how their ancestors lived and the events that shaped their lives. Major events such as the Second World War led to individuals travelling the world and meeting future spouses. Our ancestor’s lives were shaped by historic events. By looking at their involvement with these events and also

their everyday existence we can find out more about their personalities and relationships. By looking towards the past we can understand the forces that made us the people, communities and countries that we are today.

Jersey Archive is the ideal place for members of the public to visit and start to research their family history. Access to records at the Archive is free of charge but new readers will have to register – this is a simple 10 minute process but will

require you to bring either a passport or driving licence on your first visit to the Archive. Once registered our staff are always on hand to assist people starting out on their family history or to suggest new avenues of research.

Jersey Archive is fortunate to have formed a partnership with the Channel Islands’ Family History Society in 2000. The CIFHS’ collection of baptism, marriage, burial and census transcriptions are stored at the Archive and are an excellent resource for individuals to start to

research their family history. CIFHS volunteers with up to 30 years experience in family history research are available to help members of the public during opening hours.

For newcomers to family history the Archive holds baptism, marriage and burial registers, census records and wills – all of which are ideal
