by Tracey Du Val DIRECTOR F.J. De La Haye & Son (Joinery Contractors) Ltd

The company was founded in 1938 by Mr Francis J De La Haye who operated from a workshop behind his home “Grassmere” in St Mary. Mr De la Haye’s son Norman took over the reins after his father’s retirement and employed the current owner Gary Du Val in 1986, as joinery foreman. The workshop has grown over the years but the business has remained at “Grassmere”.

Our eight qualified bench hand joiners between them have some 210 years of experience. Each tradesman is responsible for marking out his job, selecting the timber, machining and using hand tools so as to create the joinery required. This enables consistency and therefore ensuring a high quality end product.

We are able to manufacture a vast number of items from timber. This includes products such as windows, doors, staircases, internal screens, bi-fold door sets, gates, items of stand alone furniture, fitted furniture, architrave sets, carpet pieces to name a few.

We can work from either architectural drawings or, alternatively, work with a client from inception through to completion on any ideas/ designs they may have.

So often, joinery is one of the last items to be sorted out on

a new build or refurbishment project when in fact it needs to be one of the first items to get clear prior to the building works getting underway.

The oak staircase on the lead photograph is proof that thinking about a main feature was essential if it was to work. Our clients wanted to mix old with new whilst keeping true to their building and came to us some time prior to the actual staircase being required. This was a great help as besides sorting out the finer details with our clients, we were able to provide the building contractor full size timber patterns showing where additional supports were required within the build so as to take the staircase as it spanned up over three floors.

By being able to work in this way and having a clear indication of what our clients required, we were able to achieve their vision and, now when you enter their hallway it certainly has that “wow” factor.

We do have a selection of photographs of previous works undertaken which we are happy to show prospective clients and also at the same time take them around our workshops so that they can see for themselves the current works we have in progress which we feel helps considerably in that by actually seeing something being manufactured by hand it helps them to relate this to their proposed works. Even when the works gets under way, we are happy to show our clients the progress being made.
