• Ian Talbot B.B.S., M.A. (1982)
Ian has been appointed Chief Executive of Chambers Ireland. Prior to joining Chambers Ireland, Ian held positions as a Director of Citigroup and JP Morgan Chase in Ireland and Chief Financial and Operations Officer of Fexco Consumer Products. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Price Waterhouse where he spent several years working in their Dublin and Luxembourg offices.
• Michael Byrne B.A., F.C.A (1981)
Michael graduated in genetics and later took a Masters degree from London University in history and theology as well as a Ph.D. in history of science. He has been a member of the governing body of Birkbeck College London since 2000 and is also a Fellow of Birkbeck. For the last 10 years he has been chief operating officer at a number of international headhunting firms. Michael entered into a civil partnership with Nick Sarker, his partner of 18 years, in 2006. He travels, reads, rides a TDM900, and supports West Ham!
• Gerard McGivern B.A. (1980)
Gerard is set to be elected Fellow to the Institution of Economic Development at the IED Annual conference in October. He will be the first person in Northern Ireland to achieve Fellowship of the Institute. Gerard receives the fellowship in recognition of his achievements in leading and managing economic development initiatives across clusters of Councils in Northern Ireland, and in leading cross border development with local authorities in the Irish Republic. A native of Rostrevor, County Down, Gerard was also the first person from Northern Ireland to graduate with an M.Sc. in Local Economic Development from the University of Glasgow in 2006.
1970s
• Erdem Idiz B.A. (1977)
After graduating with a B.A. in Geology, Erdem completed an M.Sc. (1981) and a Ph.D. (1986) in geology/geochemistry at UCLA. After a postdoctoral stint at the Institut Français du Pétrole (IFP) in Paris, he joined Shell International Oil Company in the Netherlands as a research geochemist in 1988. Since 2007 he has been senior technical adviser to global exploration in Shell E&P in the Netherlands. Erdem is married to Stella and they have two daughters (Daphne, 15 and Isabelle 10). Four years spent at Trinity and in Ireland still hold some of the fondest memories of the last 30 years!
• Marie Hay M.B. (1976)
Marie is now working in Northern British Columbia as a Consultant Paediatrician, and a Clinical Assistant Professor at the new medical school in Prince George UNBC/UBC. After graduation she did postgraduate training for two years in Ireland, followed by four years in the United Kingdom. She then went to work as a volunteer in a bush hospital in Nigeria for two years, following which she did two more years of paediatrics in Dublin before immigrating to Canada, where she has lived ever since.
• Richard McCabe M.A., Ex-F.T.C.D. (1976)
Richard was awarded a Foundation Scholarship in 1974, is now Professor of English Language and Literature and Fellow of Merton College Oxford, and was elected Fellow of the British Academy in 2007.
• Kingston Mills B.A., Ph.D. (1976)
Kingston joined the staff of TCD in 2001 as Professor of Experimental Immunology at the School of Biochemistry and Immunology, having spent several years in London and then NUI Maynooth. He was elected to Fellowship of TCD in 2004 and head of the School of Biochemistry and Immunology in June 2008. Kingston’s research is in the field of cellular immunology with a particular interest in the role of T cells in infection, cancer and autoimmunity.
• Rebecca Peterson B.A. (1975)
After getting her Marriage and Family Therapy license in May 1997, she swore she would never take another exam – reminiscent of a similar vow Rebecca made after getting her B.A. degree from Trinity in 1975. However, after thirteen years, Rebecca found herself studying for a Masters in Psychology at California State University, Northridge. Shortly after she got her license, a prior supervisor convinced her to go for a doctorate which she finished in 2004, and after another 3,000 hours of internship, she obtained the Clinical Psychologist license in February 2007. Rebecca can now safely say that, unless they invent another postgraduate degree, her student days are at long last over!
