Mary entertained and astonished many who had not been back to Trinity for some time with some amazing facts – including the news that there are now more women studying in Trinity than men! The summer event was in Owlpen Manor, a small manor house occupying a fold in the Cotswold escarpment that dates back to the twelfth century.
LONDON
E. Moira Gill M.A. (1965), Secretary
The year began in September with a visit to The Red House, home of arts and crafts designer William Morris. November brought the annual joint dinner with the TCD London Dining Club at the Royal Over-Seas League, which was addressed by Senator Shane Ross B.A. (1980). For St. Patrick’s Day, a group visited the Tutankhamen Exhibition at the O2 Bubble in Greenwich. In May, there was a guided tour of the Savill Garden in Windsor Great Park, where the azaleas were at their colourful best. The most recent event was a lunch with the Oxford Branch at the National Trust property of Clayton House, home of the Verney family.
TCD DINING CLUB LONDON
Carol Leighton B.A. (1964), Honorary Secretary 2007 saw record attendances, with an average of 80 guests per dinner. Some of our prestigious guests included:
John Fingleton B.A. (1987), Chairman of the Office of Fair Trading, spoke about his early career teaching economics in TCD, his time leading the Competition Authority in Ireland and his current work at the OFT.
Senator Shane Ross was guest speaker at the joint dinner run this year by the TCD Association London. He gave a run-down on Irish political issues and the Seanad.
Pro-Chancellor Dermot McAleese M.A. (j.o.), F.T.C.D. (1976) addressed the Trinity term dinner. A former Professor of Political Economy at TCD, he attracted a big attendance, swelled by a large number of his former students. He gave a warm-hearted report on the educational advances in TCD today.
Robert Fisk Ph.D. (1984), the Middle East correspondent for The Independent, gave an authoritative summary (with his own strongly-held opinions) of the current divide between fundamentalist Islam and the West.
The club looks forward to welcoming Professor Lord Darzi and Commissioner Charlie McCreevy as guest speakers on 22 October 2008 and 10 December 2008 respectively. For information, please email Carol Leighton B.A. (1964) at

TCD YOUNG ALUMNI LONDON
Daniela McGarry LL.B. (2002), Chairperson The 2008 social season began with the phenomenal success that was the London Trinity Ball 2008. Over 200 graduates attended the UWC, a private club in Mayfair, on a balmy summers eve. The brilliant Senator David Norris M.A. (1968) was a very special guest speaker. As raspberry belinas were sipped, Senator Norris regaled tales of bygone days at Trinity. As always at the UWC, the food and wine was outstanding and the party wrapped up at dawn. A special thanks too to Arthur Cox Solicitors for their kind sponsorship, for which the Committee is most grateful. Photos of the event are available at
www.tcd.ie/Alumni/events/photogallery/association2008.php.
The TCD Young Alumni in London celebrated the Christmas spirit in their usual manner, with a decadent party at the prestigious Adam Street Club, located just off the Strand in the heart of central London. Attendees were greeted by a wine reception in the gallery, generously sponsored by Arthur Cox Solicitors, and the party carried on into the small hours filled with Christmas cheer.
NORTH WEST ENGLAND
Martin P. J. Byrne M.A. (1963), Honorary Secretary Much invigorated by the dinner held earlier in 2007, all were delighted to be invited by William (Bill) Simpson M.A. (j.o.) (1995), a former Librarian in Trinity, to visit the newly reopened John Rylands Library. On the 9 September 2007, more than a dozen Trinity graduates with friends and family were personally escorted and guided around this beautiful neo-gothic building by Bill, the director responsible for an £18 million refurbishment programme to restore the library to its full splendour.
In May 2008, the annual dinner was relocated to Lancashire County Cricket Club and all were privileged to enjoy the company of David (Continued on page 50...)
