SAN FRANCISCO
Thomas (Tom) Browne M.A (1982), President This year TCD Alumni has a new presence on the ‘Irish Connect’ web portal. The goal of the portal is to foster interconnectedness between the numerous Irish professional groups in the greater San Francisco Bay Area while also acting as a frame of reference for alumni and others who may be considering visiting, working or emigrating to the U.S. The site is to be linked to the TCD Alumni website at
ww.tcd.ie/Alumni/global/usa.php.
Last year, the region was visited by the now retired Taoiseach Bertie Ahern. Christmas 2007 saw His Excellency Michael Collins B.Sc. (1978), Ambassador of Ireland to the United States, visit the Bay Area. More recently, novelist Anne Enright B.A. (1985), winner of the 2007 Man Booker Prize, read from some of her novels and participated in a question and answer interaction with Colm Tóibín at the Irish Literary and Historical Society in March 2008.

ALBERTA
J. Peter F. Mooney B.A.I., M.A. (1955), President 2007
On Saturday June 7 2008, a great group of 18 gathered at the Inglewood Lawn Bowling Club in Calgary for the barbecue and annual meeting of the TCD Graduates Association (Southern Alberta). While persistent rain and cool weather kept guests off the bowling green, the camaraderie warmed everyone’s spirits and a good time was enjoyed by all. A new committee was elected, with James (Jim) Gough M.B. (1975) as incoming President.
ONTARIO
John Payne M.A. (1974), Chairperson/Secretary
For the fifth annual dinner on November 2 2007, the group moved to The National Club on Bay Street where a group of approximately 60 people (including some Oxford and Cambridge alumni guests) enjoyed listening to the guest speaker, Steve Paikin of TV Ontario. Special thanks are due to John Cary B.A. (1969) and William (Bill) McConnell B.A.I., M.Sc. (1967) for assisting with the organisation and communication with alumni.
The beginning of April brought another joint universities event with Oxbridge, Harvard, Yale, Princeton and the London School of Economics. This comprised a reception and talk on Canada’s competitive advantages in a global economy by Ilse Treurnicht, CEO of the MaRS (Medical and Related Sciences) Discovery District. This continues the expansion of activities into more combined events to provide greater numbers and different functions.
This year’s dinner is in the planning stage for the end of September or early October, likely to be at the National Club at 303 Bay Street, Toronto. Interested Ontario alumni are encouraged to contact John Payne at
tcd@aci.on.ca.
VANCOUVER ISLAND
R. Alastair S. Robertson B.A.I. (1956), President The second year of the branch continued at the slow but steady pace that seems to reflect the demands of the members. In September, Timothy Brownlow M.A. (1963) and Jenny Brownlow hosted a Lunch and Garden Party at their lovely garden in Duncan. 26 members and guests attended. In April, a pub night was held at the Laurel Point Inn in Victoria. 20 attended and most remained until lights were lowered and the call to close had been issued.
Thanks are due to Paul Keith M.B. (1979) and Jackie Lee M.V.B. (1979) for hosting the AGM and barbeque at their home in Saanich on June 21. It was a perfect setting for this event and was much appreciated by everyone there.
The AGM was held prior to the barbeque, and saw Timothy Brownlow elected Vice President. It was carried out swiftly and effectively, encouraged by the aroma of cooking.
