SYMPOSIUM ON STUDENT VOLUNTEERING IN THE 21ST CENTURY

Despite increasing affluence amongst students, the spirit of volunteering and active participation is flourishing.

With this in mind, a national symposium entitled ‘Practical Planning for Student Volunteering in the 21st Century’ was organised by the Trinity Volunteers Opportunities Forum (TVOF) in Trinity in May 2008. The symposium, which was open to all Higher Education Institutions in Ireland, included as guest speaker Mary Davis, CEO of Special Olympics Ireland, and a series of practical workshops.

CALLING ALL FORMER STUDENT VOLUNTEERS!

Did you want to change the world when you were a student?

Were you involved in volunteering when at Trinity? Would you be interested in sharing your experience with today’s student volunteers?

If so, the Trinity Volunteer Opportunities Forum (TVOF) would like to hear from you. TVOF is a student initiative working to promote the spirit of volunteerism across campus and to support volunteering activities within Trinity.

We would like to make contact with former student volunteers among Trinity’s alumni to find out more about our volunteering past and the people who were part of it. We want to understand why we got involved, what motivated us then and how this has changed over time, so that we can help foster Trinity’s rich tradition in this area for the future.

If you benefited from your volunteering experience and would like to ‘give something back’ to today’s volunteers, please contact:

The Trials of Oscar Wilde

The University Philosophical Society staged a theatrical re-enactment of the infamous trials of its celebrated alumni, Oscar Wilde, last April. The renowned poet, playwright and novelist was known for his razor sharp wit, his flamboyant lifestyle and his defiance of conformity. The trials that began in April 1895 led to Wilde’s public disgrace and two year imprisonment for acts of ‘gross indecency’. The re-enactment took place in the period settings of the GMB Chamber. The audience were encouraged to interact with the performance, being treated as if they were the court jury. More information is available at www.tcdphil.com.
