Trinty Today | WELCOME

Welcome

Dear Graduate,

Ireland is a transformed country. We now live in a more open community, a more outward-looking society and a more dynamic economy. Despite recent economic downturns, we are a more confident nation than many could have envisaged. Trinity has played an important role in helping this happen by remaining true to our adopted mission: “To play a pivotal role in helping Ireland be the most productive place to invent, work, and learn, and the most civilised place to live and contribute to local and global society.”

You will find great examples of what is going on in Trinity in this magazine, I bring a few to your attention:

A healthier society with healthier individuals

Trinity has a proud history of advancing this nation’s health – we are the home of Ireland’s only School of Genetics which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Trinity’s School of Medicine, which will celebrate its Tercentenary in 2011, is a stakeholder in planning a major Biosciences Institute on Pearse Street, as well as enhancing research facilities in our two academic hospitals, Tallaght and St. James’s.

Adding value to an open economy

Universities are playing an increasing role in finding new ways to create and add value to our economy. The launch in Trinity of the world’s first Science Gallery is helping make Ireland become a creative, technologically literate, ‘scientific island’. This is a totally new concept, and one of which we in Trinity are extraordinarily proud.

Promoting creativity in our economy and culture

Trinity continues to build on its unique heritage in arts and humanities research, reflected in part by our outstanding library collections. One of the most exciting initiatives to emerge has been the creation of the Long Room Hub – the research institute for the arts and humanities at Trinity College. The Long Room Hub brings together a diverse group of academics to create a world leading research institute of advanced studies looking at all aspects of human understanding.

Contributing to Ireland’s international role

By any metric, Trinity always has been and remains an Irish university of global consequence. By building on this tradition, and through key appointments in International Development, we are helping Ireland work on some major global challenges in international trade and debt.

Contributing to Irish society

Trinity has always had a strong voice in supporting novel and exciting developments in Irish society. This tradition continues. Possibly our most innovative programme in recent years has been the launch of a major teaching and research initiative for people with intellectual disabilities – a project that challenges our perceptions of the nature of our society and the contribution each of us can make.

The Trinity Experience

All these programmes have both research and teaching dimensions. It is the hallmark of a Trinity education that our students have ready contact with wonderful academics who are blazing their respective trails internationally. This is the bedrock on which all Trinity’s great work is built – our students, present and past!

Your University continues to excel. Trinity is a dominant force in education and research in areas of great importance. I ask you, our alumni, to take an interest in your University’s mission, to promote Trinity and its initiatives amongst your friends and contacts and to stay connected. You can do this by contacting your local alumni branch or Trinity Foundation directly.

You are part of a wonderful community. Our graduates remain our greatest ambassadors and champions, playing a key role in helping us through the exciting and challenging times we face.

I look forward to meeting many of you in the coming year. I hope it is a good one for you.

Dr John Hegarty
