ANTRIM AND DERRY

E. Joy M.A. (1960) and J.S. White B.Comm. M.A. (1959), Joint Honorary Secretaries

The autumn meeting ended the year with a brief AGM (the 45th) where Richard Lyons M.A. (1964), Honorary Treasurer of 21 years, gave a lucid and entertaining talk. The spring meeting had the well-known historian and lecturer, our honorary member Alec Blair, speaking on ‘The ’98 Rebellion in North Antrim.’

The annual outing was to the North Antrim Coast with a visit to Dunseverick Harbour, Dunseverick Castle and the surrounding area, followed by an evening meal in the Causeway Hotel.

On May 23 2008, over 65 guests sat down for the annual dinner in Castleknock Golf Club. Sadly, Canon Denholm Moore M.A. (1945) passed away at this event. We send our sympathy to his daughter and to his two sons.

KILDARE AND WEST WICKLOW

Michael J McCann M.A. (1979) , Honorary Secretary The past year was a busy one for the branch, with visits to the Garda Síochána Museum and Archives in the Records Tower at Dublin Castle followed by a guided tour of the Chester Beatty Library in the nearby Clock Tower building. In February 2008, St Brigid’s Cathedral in Kildare was also visited.

The 12th AGM took place on 4 March and the branch’s successful formula of a quick AGM, a prolonged wine and cheese reception, and an interesting speaker — this year the architectural historian Peter D. Pearson B.A. (1977) — saw a turnout of over 40 in attendance.

WICKLOW

Laurence Edward (Eamon) Darcy Ph.D. (1967), Chairman

The branch is proud to report another very active year. New younger members have joined and are most welcome.

The spring lunch attracted a large attendance on a sunny day at Tinakilly House Hotel in Co. Wicklow. A reception on the lawn was followed by an excellent lunch. The contribution by guest speaker Morgan O’Sullivan, an eminent film producer, former Managing Director of Ardmore Studios and RTE broadcaster, was the highlight of the occasion.

Once again, many thanks to Senator Shane Ross B.A. (1980) and broadcaster M. Ruth Buchanan B.A. (1967) for making their house and gardens available for the garden party fundraising event in support of the Trinity Access Programmes. Sartorial elegance was added by guests wearing hats, and lunch and beverages were enjoyed by the large attendance.

NORTHERN IRELAND

Tony Hart B.A. (1968), President. The annual dinner was held at Malone Golf Club, Belfast on 9 November 2007. Amongst the guests were the Rt Rev James Mehaffey, M.A. B.D. (1952) and his wife Thelma representing the Antrim and Derry Branch, along with Ian Bailey M.B., F.R.C.S.I. & E. (1951) accompanied by his wife Ruth, representing the Fermanagh Branch, as well as Senator Shane Ross and Ms Norah Kelso, Alumni Relations Officer, Trinity Foundation. On 7 June, a small number of members and their friends had a most enjoyable outing to Downpatrick organised by secretary William Devlin M.A. (1972), with conducted tours of the Saint Patrick’s Centre and the Downpatrick Museum interspersed by an excellent lunch in Denvir’s Hotel.

The annual dinner will again be held at Malone Golf Club on Friday 14 November 2008, when the principal guest will be the Rt Rev Lord Eames LL.D. (h.c.) (1992).

Great Britain

DEVON AND CORNWALL

Janice Went M.B. (1961), Honorary Secretary A lunch was held at Saltram House in Plymouth on Saturday 12 April, attended by 21 members and 12 guests. After lunch, a number of guests toured Saltram House, which is in the care of the National Trust and is well known to many as the setting for the recent film version of ‘Sense and Sensibility’. A visit to Torbay sailing club is planned for April 2009.

EAST MIDLANDS

Sue Duce (née Roberts) M.A. (1970) , Honorary Treasurer

Members gathered at Newstead Abbey in April and, in October, TCD Librarian Robin Adams flew over to Loughborough University to give East Midlands members an update on the university library. A lively questions and answers session enabled those present to get a comprehensive idea of how members of the library staff cope with the care of precious old books and, at the same time, find room to accommodate all the newly published books which the University receives by dint of being a copyright library.

In March, the Association gathered at Quorn Grange Hotel. After an excellent lunch, Sir Ian Byatt (ex-chairman of Ofwat and husband of member Deidre Kelly M.D., F.R.C.P.I. (1971)) gave an illuminating insight into the issues leading up to the privatisation of the British water industry and its current (sic) problems. The next meeting will be held in Loughborough University on 4 October, with Senator Ivana Bacik LL.B. (1989) as guest Speaker.

GLOUCESTERSHIRE

Michael (Mike) Hayes M.A., Ph.D. (1955), Chairman In February this year, former Senator Mary Henry M.A. M.D. (1963) travelled across the Irish (Continued on page 49...)
