HONORARY DEGREES


WINTER COMMENCEMENTS, DECEMBER 2007

NGOZI OKONJO-IWEALA LITT. D., the newly appointed Managing Director of the World Bank, was conferred with a Doctor in Letters.

LIAM MULVIHILL LL D., former Director General of the GAA and one of Ireland’s leading sport administrators, was conferred with a Doctor in Laws.

SHIRIN EBADI LL D. was the first Iranian and first Muslim woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize (2003). She was also the first appointed female judge in Iran and was conferred with a Doctor in Laws.

VERONICA DUNNE MUS. D., the renowned soprano, teacher, and prominent promoter of operatic singing, received a Doctor in Music for her contribution to music in Ireland.

VAIRA V E-FREIBERGA LL D. was President of the Republic of Latvia from 1999 up until July of this year. She played a leading role in the transformation of the country in recent years, culminating with Latvia’s entry into the European Union. She was conferred with a Doctor in Laws.

SUMMER COMMENCEMENTS, JULY 2008

ROBERT REDFORD LITT.D., an international film star and activist on environmental issues and Native American rights, was honoured with a Doctor in Letters.

JOHN HUME LL.D. was the President of the SDLP for more than two decades, a key figure in the peace process, one of the architects of the Good Friday Agreement, and joint recipient (with David Trimble) of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1998. He was conferred with a Doctor in Laws.

ROBERT FISK LITT.D., a prominent journalist and Middle East Correspondent for The Independent in the UK, with over 30 years experience in international reporting, was awarded a Doctor in Letters.

DÓNAL LUNNY MUS.D., a famous Irish musician and producer, who has had a pioneering influence on the development of Irish traditional music over the last 40 years, was conferred with a Doctor in Music.

MELISSA WEBB LL.D., honoured with a Doctor in Laws, is the Governor of the Adelaide and Meath Hospital, the National Children’s Hospital in Tallaght and the Rotunda Hospital. She is also Director of the National Children’s Hospital Foundation Board and former President of the Irish Federation of University Women.
