Each year the Service conducts over 100 Workplace Fire-Safety training sessions. With approximately 12 local employees per session, it’s easy to see that those in Jersey’s workforce are steadily becoming more fire-safe and so, better able to protect themselves and their livelihoods from the devastating effects of fire.

A fire can be catastrophic for a business, so much so, that many companies never recover. So Jersey Fire and Rescue are currently delivering three different types of course to provide people with a greater awareness and understanding of the dangers of fire in a workplace context; in turn, this understanding assists the employee to identify, and so reduce, the risks that fire presents at work.

Fire Awareness The Fire Awareness course is designed for all members of staff and is especially useful as part of an induction programme. The course helps people understand how fires start, how to spot potential fire hazards and what actions to take should a fire break out.

Fire Marshal Every company needs staff that can be relied upon in a crisis. The

Fire Marshal course aims to provide the necessary skills and knowledge to act as confident and competent fire marshals. Staff will receive training to help them manage a fire situation, assist in the safe evacuation of people and also assist with fire risk reduction in the workplace.

Fire Extinguisher Course Many fires in the workplace are noticed very quickly and can often be extinguished rapidly using a fire extinguisher before the fire has had time to develop.

It’s very important

that staff members are trained in how to use fire extinguishers properly. Without this knowledge, staff could actually make the situation much worse, and they might even get injured. The Fire Extinguisher course ensures delegates know which type of fire extinguisher to use on which type of fire and when an attempt to put the fire out should not be made. Those attending the course will gain experience using different types of extinguishers in our real flame fire training unit; this piece of equipment realistically simulates the type of fires that can be tackled using a fire extinguisher.

Each course lasts for two hours and delegates can undertake individual courses or take advantage of a full day’s training incorporating all three courses.
