Reaching the Community


At State Street, we believe the success of our business is linked to the wellbeing of the communities in which we operate. As a major employer in Jersey, we have extended our community outreach efforts to reflect our increased size and workforce on the island.


Our Channel Islands community support programme (CSP) committee, made up of employee volunteers, determines our local strategy for community support. Aligning with our global corporate citizenship objectives, we support local charitable organisations and events, with priority given to events that promote education and help people gain work. This year we supported the holiday activity schemes organised by the Community Sports Development programme of the States of Jersey during the summer and the October half term. We also funded events at Le Squez youth club, supported the “tinathon” on behalf of the Shelter Trust for the homeless, and assisted the Jersey Employment Trust, which helps people with disabilities return to work.


We also host the State Street Inter- School Challenge, an event for sixth formers from schools in both Jersey and Guernsey. Employees are closely involved in the organisation and smooth running of the day, where schools compete in a variety of physical and mental challenges for the chance to win a

trophy and £500 prize. Our employees are active volunteers, and they are entitled to time out of the office to tackle projects in the community. They could be swapping suits for overalls to paint a building for the Centre Point Trust, serving soup on behalf of the Shelter Trust in the Royal Square, or packing and distributing hampers for the Jersey Christmas Appeal. Volunteering is an important way for community organisations to draw on the resources and talents of our employees.


Focus on Education State Street in Jersey runs schemes to encourage young enterprise and continuing education. We participate in the Young Enterprise Company Programme for 16 year olds, as well as a bursary scheme that offers students a minimum of four weeks paid work experience each year, together with a bursary payment during their university course. In addition, we provide work placements for Highlands College students studying for finance and technology degrees. We also provide work experience opportunities for people who are returning to work or planning a career change through various States and Jersey Finance schemes.


Grantmaking is a key element of our corporate citizenship efforts. The State Street Foundation, our charitable grantmaking arm, is


focused on supporting long-term projects or schemes that can have a lasting positive impact. In 2010, the Foundation donated $17.8 million in grants globally. We also look to coordinate employee volunteering opportunities with the organisations that receive grants. Headway Jersey and the Shelter Trust are among the organisations that have benefited from grants this year.


Global Force, Local Citizen While our emphasis is on local support, our activities are aligned with our global vision for corporate citizenship. State Street runs campaigns across the global organisation that support a common cause, including fundraising for the disaster relief efforts following the Japan earthquake last year. Our recent Global Giving campaign has focused the resources and expertise of our employees globally to support education- related causes and initiatives throughout the world. As part of the programme, we will be working with local primary schools in Jersey to deliver the Young Enterprise Our Community programme to eight and nine year olds.


This rewarding mix of local activity and global support helps to differentiate our approach to corporate citizenship and enables employees of State Street in Jersey to support the communities and causes that are close to them.
