COMMENT
An enabling future
Materials have become the key enabling aspect for the future of semiconductor
manufacturing in the last few years. No matter what aspect of manufacturing
and the challenges they face you will find materials are enabling the ongoing
challenges facing manufacturing of high tech devices.
Whether it is the substrates used to manufacture semiconductors or the
materials required to make high K gates or new conducting materials, this is
one segment of the industry that is unlikely to be hit in the same manner
during the current financial crisis.
In this supplement we have a number of the leading material suppliers writing
about the latest advances in materials for semiconductor manufacturing. As
can be seen it is not only the materials but the delivery of the materials that is
developing at such a fast pace. Ironically one of the key enablers of the new

delivery systems is the new materials used in the delivery system. Proof again
that the science of materials constantly provides the industry with what it
needs and when it needs it.
With such a growth in advanced enabling materials there has developed a need
for a greater understanding of materials throughout the industry. We are
combining potentially dangerous materials in unheard of, albeit minute,
quantities. There is still a great deal of research and caution to be taken into
account as manufacturers demand more and more exotic solutions.
2009 is expected to be a relatively stable year for
the materials industry and most
negative results will be to do with the
level of slowdown across the
industry.
