■ Mexicana launches direct Gatwick route
Mexicana Airlines is to launch its first transatlantic
route in 2009, with a direct scheduled flight
between Gatwick and Mexico City. From January
18, Mexicana will fly twice a week, increasing
to four times a week from February 18. Flights
will leave Gatwick’s North Terminal on Sunday
and Thursday, with departures being added on
Wednesday and Saturday from February.
■ Vertical’s Healey buys into Worldtravellers
Vertical Group chief executive Peter Healey has
become a minority shareholder in, and chairman
of, online travel agent Worldtravellers. Last
month Worldtravellers was purchased by World
Ski & Travel, which is jointly owned by Tom
Dunkley and Karl Harrison. The Freedom Travel

The deal was secured through a conglomerate
of aviation lenders including Deutsche Bank,
Standard Chartered and BNP Paribas.
■ C&M Travel Recruitment opens Sydney office
C&M Travel Recruitment has opened an office in
Australia. The firm, which celebrates its 10th year
this month, aims to mirror its claimed number
one UK position in the Australian travel market
from its base in Sydney.
■ Brits still ignore eco issues when travelling
Some 55% of UK holidaymakers have said
environmental concerns do not influence their
choice of holiday. According to research by G2
Data Dynamics, just 4% said they had stopped
flying domestically, 3% don’t fly abroad, 3%
ensure destinations have eco-friendly values,
and 2% say they carbon-offset their flights.
■ Worldhotels ups rates for key accounts
International hotel group Worldhotels is offering
its key accounts a rate 5% better than the best
available rate for contracted and non-contracted
destinations.
