Twenty-two minority businesses participated as prime contractors and vendors. This
represents a 120 percent increase from FY 2006. Minority primes and vendors were
paid $4,438,828.09. Their MBE subcontractors were paid $113,463.66.
OMBD monitored 78 construction contracts. MBE subcontracting construction
participation percentages were 14 percent. The City paid construction prime
contractors and vendors $52,570,844.43. Minority contractors were paid
$7,513,679.70. This was a 1 percent increase from last year.
OMBD monitored 120 non-construction contracts. MBE subcontracting
participation on non-construction projects was 11 percent.
OMBD sponsored 40 technical outreach training sessions, reaching 3,598
entrepreneurs and business owners representing an increase of 177 percent from
FY 2006. Seminar topics included development of marketing plans, financial
management and procurement principles.
In FY 2007, OMBD registered 155 new businesses that received guidance,
instruction, and support services compared to 122 new businesses registered
in 2006. This represents an increase of 27 percent. Two hundred and sixty-one
entrepreneurs were counseled in OMBD’s offices during FY 2007.
To help individuals with their business needs, OMBD now features a free, one-
stop business resource center located on the 9th floor of City Hall. This business
resource center is equipped with computers for online research, a DVD library,
resource books, directories and other literature that offers valuable business insights.
Individuals at every stage of business development can access these resources to help
with starting, financing, growing and marketing their operations. During FY 2007,
35 firms used the business resource center compared to five in FY 2006.
A prime contractor has overall responsibility for coordinating and integrating
the activities of a number of subcontractors.
Subcontractors are specialty companies hired by the prime contractor to
perform specific tasks.
