WIRELESS
The Wireless Enterprise Phase 2 well underway
Trying to get a grasp of where
the typical enterprise is at with
wireless technology and its
deployment can be confusing,
with so many conflicting views
and personal opinions.
I
n trying to get a clear picture of
the market and the opportunity for
the European channel, IT Europa
has interviewed a broad spread of
wireless vendors and distributors
asking for candid and real experience
as well as opinion.
Cutting through all the marketing
hype it is clear that wireless is still in an
evolutionary phase and definitely not a
mature market. It appears that we are
about half way through phase 2 and
rapidly moving to phase 3.
I asked all the interviewees what
they meant by these 3 phases. Simon
Wilson, portfolio leader for Enterprise
data and wireless at Nortel explained,
“Phase 1 in enterprise wireless was all
about wireless zones in the office. This
was to support isolated mobile users in
specific areas of the office, often driven
by the demands of these users.”
“Over the last 2 years we have been
in phase 2 where enterprises have
been buying wireless for real business
solutions, particularly in vertical
markets like Healthcare, Leisure, Retail
and Manufacturing. Phase 2 has been a
real opportunity for the channel in that
deployments need lots of professional
services to make them work efficiently
and securely.”
“Phase 3 is about to get underway
utilising new technologies like 802.11
n. What will characterise this phase will
be wireless becoming an integral part
of the network infrastructure and by
2010 wireless will almost certainly be
dominant at the edge of the network.”
