With the ongoing confl icts in Iraq and
Afghanistan, 2006 was a disastrous
year in terms of journalists’ deaths: 75
journalists and 32 media staff were killed
in those 12 months. This is the highest
fi gure since the World Association of
Newspapers took up its statistics in 1998,
and it’s with those fi gures in mind that
World Press Freedom Day 2007 takes on
an added poignancy.
