DAISY AND RUBY’S
ADVENTURES
The holidays are upon us! It’s time to enjoy all the sparkle and glitter that the
season brings. This is the time of year that makes even the oldest person feel like
a kid again. Lights and ornaments adorn the houses and neighborhoods and
remind us of the days when we begged for that Barbie Dream House or the Castle
Grayskull playset. Actually, I’m still hoping for the Barbie Dream House this year.
Still, no matter how much we love the holidays and our loved ones, we all need
to get out once in a while, so here are some suggestions for events that you can-
not miss out.
I love theater and this holiday theater season has much to offer. Of course, there
are the classics like How the Grinch Stole Christmas, at the Old Globe Theatre, and
the fabulous Scrooge in Rouge at the Diversionary Theatre. For a complete list of
shows check out page 18. Singing and caroling are also big holiday events and on
page 19 you can find a listing of the special holiday shows that our fantastic local
choruses are presenting.
One event that doesn’t just take place during the holidays that I been meaning
to tell you all about is the Flame Follies Review. Every Friday at the Flame, the ladies
put on a fantastic show with plenty of glitter and glamour. Nothing is better than
starting a weekend with a great cabaret show, and the follies know how to make it
happen. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. sharp so arrive early to get a seat.
You know I’m all about benefits and giving back, so I want everyone to attend
the 12 Kings and Two Queens event at Bacchus House on December 9 at 9pm.
This special drag king and drag queen show is collecting toys for Christie’s Place.
Please show up with a toy to put a smile on a kid’s face.
New Years is also around the corner and I’m working hard to find the perfect New
Year’s Eve party outfit. If you are wondering where to go, one recommendation
that is always at the top of my list is Top of the Park. Their special dinner and party
combo is everything you want in one place, so you don’t have to drive around
town. Club Universal also has a very special New Year’s celebration extravaganza,
so be sure to look into that also.
Looking Back
The winners of last month’s contest won some great free prizes. In November, I
gave away tickets to the B-52s that included a dinner for two, and well... Guillermo
and his boyfriend had a great time. I also gave away plenty of tickets to the fan-
tastic Xanadu (I just want to be on stage with my roller skates), and some lovely
dinners at Inn at the Park. You see boys and girls, it pays to participate and in these
tight financial times, we can all enjoy free goodies.
Of course, November brought us Thanksgiving, also known as the annual
eating contest, but it was also a month with plenty of music. Did you get to see
Miss M on stage? Madonna was fantastic and seeing her from the 12th row I really
admired how incredible she looked. Singing ladies were left and right. k.d. Lang
brought the house down at the Copley Symphony Hall and country beauty Carrie
Underwood packed the Sports Arena with her fans.
If you know me... you know that politics is not my thing but although I was
thrilled to see Obama win the election, I’m really hurt and angry about the pass-
ing of Prop 8. It just goes to show that we still have a long way to go before we will
be accepted as truly equal. There is still a chance the California Supreme Court will
overturn the initiative, but if not, we need to prepare ourselves for a fight in 2010
to repeal the measure.
