OLIVERI
VIBES
Steven Oliveri has been a DJ for 29 years now. His
greatest reward in doing this, is as he puts it, “Watching
VEN
people respond to what I enjoy doing best. Making
UPLIFTING
people happy and allowing them to dance and relieve
O
’
S their frustrations. There is nothing greater than that.
There’s nothing more beautiful than that.” One of his

T U create an all-positive groove on both those nights. The
Rage Monthly asked him a few questions to learn more.
Read on.
Rage: If you were stuck on a desert island and could only listen
to the music of one singer, who would it be and why?
Steven Oliveri: That’s hard to answer because there
are a lot of them. You know, without thinking, it would
probably be Whitney Houston. She can hold a key and
she’s got a beautiful voice.
Rage: Have you ever played a song that you didn’t like but
was popular?
SO: I would never play anything that is vulgar or annoy-
ing to me. It would not be in my library. What also sets me
aside from other DJs is I do my own editing. I take a song
and I take parts out of it that I don’t like. It’s basically the
same song but it’s a different version. It cleans it up so it’s
constant uplifting high-energy. It has to have energy. It
has to make you stomp your feet and move your body.
Rage: Please tell me about the charity organizations that you
have helped over the years by DJ-ing.
SO: This past year, my pool parties were with Guys Like
Us (G.L.U.). I did two of those parties and at The Center
here in San Diego and The Center in New York City. An-
other big event was Dancing in the Streets in Cleveland,
Ohio. That was for the AIDS Task Force of greater Cleve-
land. There’s many more but those are the big ones.
Rage: Is there one event where you spun that stands out most
vividly in your mind?
SO: That would be Dancing in the Streets. There were
about 10,000 people. It was in Cleveland, Ohio. I was the
only DJ and they raised over $30,000 dollars. I cried at
the end of my performance and they all clapped and
said, “Look. He’s crying.” I balled my eyes out. It was just so
incredible to see. They closed off a block that was prob-
ably a mile long in downtown Cleveland and it was just
people in the streets dancing to my music.
