AT WORK
Annie Leibovitz, one of America’s greatest living photographers, and lesbian, has a new book out called At
Work in which she takes one of her famous photographs and tells you the backstory of how it happened, what
it took to set it up, the surprises that would often happen, and about her “process” and how it’s changed over
the years. It’s easy to spend a good hour with more than 100 photos after first picking it up. She started out
her career as a photographer for Rolling Stone and has since received all the greatest awards and honors most
photographers could only dream of, including being the first American photographer asked do a portrait
of the Queen of England (featured on a recent PBS special on the Queen). She’s photographed war zones,
historical events and many famous people such as Demi Moore naked and pregnant, and she tells you about
how each photo came together. Other amazing photographs include those of John Lennon and Yoko Ono,
Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis in their sixties (in full makeup but one in briefs and the other in a satin slip), Bette
Midler, Johnny Depp, Arnold Schwartzenegger (from his backside) when he was at his peak, and it just goes
on and on. A very cool book!
OUTBACK
Of the more than 80 gay and lesbian related picture books currently in print (and a disproportionate num-
ber of them are for the guys) there is one photographer whose books are the ones people consistently reach
for first. Paul Freeman’s series of photo books featuring Australian guys has hit the nail on the head for the
fifth time in a row now! His new book Outback features Aussie cowboys on the farm doing various things and
in various states of dress—and undress. It’s all very tastefully done, of course. Are Australian men really that
much more beautiful? Or does he just know how to pick ‘em? The Australian DNA Magazine is extra popular,
too. Hmmm. Well, you’ll have to decide for yourself.
DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE
Down the Rabbit Hole by Justin Monroe is a new large-format fantasy photography book done in an exotic
style reminiscent of Pierre et Gilles and David LaChappelle with elaborate sets, wild makeup and creative cos-
tumes (and nudity) featuring personalities you will probably recognize such as Amanda Lepore and various
porn stars. This book will surely elicit at least one “OMG, look at this one!” if your unexpected drop-in guests
were to find this on your coffee table. It’s a very impressive photo book that’s sure to break the ice, or perhaps
more.
BREAKING BAD NEWS WITH BABY ANIMALS
Any book, greeting card, calendar or anything which features cute kittens, adorable puppies or fluffy
bunnies is sure to sell, but I’ll bet you never saw this one coming. There’s a new book that has everyone
howling as soon as they pick it up called Breaking Bad News with Baby Animals. Is there something you
need to tell someone and don’t quite know how to say it? Simply select the one you need from this
book of forty postcards and pop it in the mail. Of course, it’s all ridiculous and silly, but so hilarious. Find
the right one to break bad news such as... “You’ll never walk again”, “I used to be a man,” “You have B.O.,”
“You’re bad in bed,” “Your toupée isn’t fooling anyone.” And it’s all downhill from there! This definitely
makes a great white elephant gift at a holiday party.
