The trio represent leading ferry

technology, bui lt to the highest international standards and are fully compliant with IMO HSC 2000. The vessels will add signif icantly to the developing transport network around the islands, reducing transit times and improving inter-island connectivity. The fer r ies were speci f ica l ly

designed by BMT to cope with the harsh weather condit ions around the islands and incorporate a high performance hull form with an active ride control motion damping system as well as higher freeboard and tunnel clearance for improved sea-keeping. The three vessels made their delivery

voyage from Singapore together under their own power, demonstrating their robust construction and suitability for

operations around the island chain.

New order Meanwhi le, in other news, FBMA Ma r i ne , t he Ab oit i z - owne d shipbui lder based in Cebu, The Phi l ippines , has signed a new building contract with Wightlink, of Portsmouth, UK. The order is to build two new 41m

medium-speed passenger catama- rans, for use on the Portsmouth to Ryde crossing. This success builds on FBMA’s newbuilding contract for a 70m ro-pax ferry for Scotland, and a 57m high-speed catamaran ferry for New Caledonia. The order for FBMA project 1026

and 1027 was awarded following an internat ional tender and the two

vessels, due for delivery in summer 2009, will provide replacements for two existing high-speed catamaran vessels. The ships will have a length overall of 40.90m, a length waterline of 38.60m, and an overall beam of 12.00m. The new catamarans, designed by

BMT Nigel Gee Ltd, have been config- ured to optimise both sea-keeping and fuel eff iciency on the very busy Portsmouth to Ryde commuter route. The vessels have a single accommo-

dation deck with 260 seats and double width boarding access doors, to enable rapid embarkation and disembarka- tion. Additional features include the incorporation of a dedicated stowage for bicycles and an external seating area. SBI
