Te Netherlands-based shipbuilder Damen, has recently delivered a large number of its modular tug designs.

C

ontracts for various types of tugs have continued to flow into Damen in recent months. The multitude of

recent deliveries for Damen demonstrates that the tug market is still very crowded, with no signs of a slow-down yet reported. One of its most popular designs is its 2810 azimuthing stern drive (ASD) series. Recent deliveries include a pair of vessels,

Tornado and Typhoon, for Baltic Fleet Ltd, of Russia. Tey are to be used in towing, mooring, and fire-fighting operations, and are classed by Lloyd’s Register to: +100 A1 Escort Tug, Ice Class 1a FS, Specified Coastal Service standards. Te 2810 series is 28.67m long, with a

beam of 10.43m, and a depth at the sides of 4.60m. Two Caterpillar 3056 T 50Hz generator sets are fitted, rated at 105kVA, 400V. Tornado and Typhoon have an aft

draught of 4.68m, but the former displaces 550tonnes and the latter just 544tonnes. Tornado reached a speed ahead of 12.7knots on trials, and 12.2knots astern, with a bollard pull of 51tonnes ahead and 46.6tonnes astern. During Typhoon’s performance trials it

attained 12.6knots ahead and 12.1knots astern, and had a 50.9tonne bollard pull ahead, with a 47.6 bollard pull astern. Both tugs are powered by two Caterpillar

3516B TA/B main engines, rated at 3132kW at 1600rev/min. Two Rolls-Royce US 255 azimuth thrusters are also installed on each vessel, and two electrically-driven air compressors and one manual emergency
