writes Dag Pike.
K
vaerner Fjellstrand is one of Norway’s major ferry
builders and has been a pioneer of several innova-
tive developments including the Foil Cat, that is, a
catamaran riding on foils at high speed.
This very high-speed ferry concept has a stabilisation system
that helps to cope with rough seas, and a matching system is
available for fitting to the catamaran ferries in the Flying Cat
range.
Fjellstrand has also moved into larger sizes of fast ferry,
capable of carrying cars, and offers designs from 60m to 81m,
but new prospects for slower car ferries to meet the needs of
local services in Norway are also being built.
Fjellstrand specialises in aluminium construction, and in a
new departure, many of the ferries being built to replace older
vessels on Norwegian routes are being constructed using this
material.
Meanwhile, Båtservice Mandal has made a speciality of
building smaller fast ferries based on catamaran hulls, and
has supplied many of these for the Norwegian coastal waters

A new emerging speciality at Båtservice is
low-wash river passenger vessels. One 32m craft has
recently been completed for the operation on the
River Danube, and a second one is currently under
construction.
Iran has been a good customer for Båtservice, with a total
of 20 vessels delivered over the years. The latest contract is Engine D5 D7

ports and harbours.
These 17.5m craft have a speed in excess of 25knots, and
in addition to pilotage, these vessels are to be used for
search and rescue.
Closer to home, Båtservice is building a series of sophis-
ticated lifeboats for the Norwegian Lifeboat Service. With

engines totally over 4000hp, these lifeboats have a speed in
excess of 30knots, and are equipped for a wide range of rescue
duties. SBI
