This vessel, built by Swede Ship Composite, uses materials that flex and absorb shock.
relatively high-elongation materials rather than carbon, which he regarded as too stiff for the intended use. Techni- cal glass fabrics and high-density foam core (DIAB) were specified, strength and resi l ience being enhanced, however, by bonding in longitudinal and transverse composite stiffeners along with sandwich bulkheads. The shell structure’s composite skins
comprise Devold multi-axial weaves of E-glass in vinyl-ester resin, and these sandwich Divinycell HD type PVC foam. Each craft relies on a modified RIB collar of elastic polyurethane foam inside a tough Kevlar-reinforced polyurethane skin to augment stabil- ity at high angles of heel. The resulting Victoria and Rausing
class boats, of 12m and 20m length respectively, both feature the use of f ibreglass composite sandwich structure of this type for their hulls, decks, and deckhouse/superstructures. Actual dimensions for the larger of the two classes are 19.4m length overall, with a hull length of 17m, an overall beam of 5.1m, and a shallow draught of 0.9m. Two 900hp Scania turbocharged engines driving through Rolls-Royce Kamewa waterjets give the 30tonne craft a top speed of 36knots. Clearly, composites have been a
key enabler in pushing the bounds of performance in marine vessels and, led to a signif icant extent by the minimally regulated sport and record-breaking sector, this process continues. But, as we have indicated, the
highest-technology does not always have to be enlisted for success and a judicious compromise between technology and affordabi l ity can prove equally successful. Composites simply broaden the range of options available. SBI
