Two recent contracts at Simek include

another UT 755 LC to be delivered in June 2009 to Norwegian owner, Havtrål AS, and a combined platform supply/ stand-by vessel for Simon Mokster. The UT 755 LC will be upgraded with an additional deck and extra accommo- dation. The aft deck is also strength- ened for a 20tonne offshore crane that will allow the vessel to carry out light construction or ROV work offshore. Later this year Simek will deliver a

purse seiner/trawler to Lunar Fishing Co Ltd, of Peterhead, Scotland. This 69m vessel will be powered by a Wärtsilä 12V32 main engine with Caterpillar supplying the auxiliaries. This craft is

one of several large fishing vessels that are on order at Norwegian shipyards for British owners. This Simek vessel is one of a new generation of multi-purpose fishing vessels designed to be able to exploit a variety of fisheries. Designers Vik-Sandvik developed

the 65m Quantus that is being built by Eidsvik Skipsbyggeri for another Scottish owner. Quantus incorporates a newly

developed hull form that is claimed to enhance sea-keeping and reduce fuel consumption. The engine for this vessel will also be a Wärtsilä 12V32 developing 6000kW at 750rev/min, and, like the Lunar vessel, all the deck

machinery will be supplied by Karmøy. Vik Sandvik also designed the largest

of this quartet of fishing boats, the 71.6m Serene that is under construc- tion at West Contractors. Tis will be the first British fishing vessel to feature a raised foredeck and shelter. It will be fitted with a 6000kW MaK diesel engine, and MaK auxiliaries for a top speed of 17knots. Fitjar Mekaniske is the builder of the

71.5m Christina S. Once again it will have a Wärtsilä main engine of 6000kW and, like the other vessels, the catch will be stored in a series of seawater tanks. The vessel will be fitted with retractable bow and stern thrusters.SBI
