ABAFT Aft of any particular point on the vessel; e.g., abaft the mast — behind the mast.
Abeam At right angles to the fore and aft centerline.
About To go about, to change tack by moving the bow through the wind.
Aft Toward the stern of the vessel.
Amidships Midway between stem and stern.
Apogean
tides Tides of decreased range, or currents of decreased speed, occurring monthly as the result of the
moon being in apogee (farthest from the Earth).
Apparent
wind The wind felt aboard the boat.
Athwart From side to side.
Avast To stop, to hold fast; e.g., avast heaving.
Awash A vessel, wreck, or shoal so low that water constantly washes over.
Aweigh Term to indicate that the anchor has broken out of the ground.
BACK (a) Wind shifting counterclockwise; (b) To sheet a sail out to windward.
Bar A shoal in the approach to a harbor.
Beacon Aid to navigation, lighted or unlighted, radio or racon, set on the shore or rocks,
or set into the bottom.
Beam (a) Extreme width of a vessel; (b) Athwartships timber on which the deck is laid.
Beam
bearing Direction of objects when abeam; i.e., at right angles to the fore and aft line.
