well as providing commercially focused advice to the fashion and other creative
industries, for many years. We have the expertise to guide the young design
entrepreneur through the start-up process, from obtaining funding and hiring staff
through to expanding their brand portfolio or even ultimately selling their business.
The Law provides invaluable advice to young designers who are taking their first
steps into the business world by providing an overview of the law, in easy to
understand language, to help them successfully set up and exploit their business.
We are delighted to be working in collaboration with Fashion Fringe at Covent
Garden in producing the first edition of The Look & The Law and we wish everyone
reading this Guide, aspiring to great achievements in the fashion industry, every
success for the future!
FASHION FRINGE AT COVENT GARDEN
Fashion Fringe at Covent Garden is an initiative created 6 years ago by its founder
Colin McDowell and IMG Fashion – a global solutions provider, connecting fashion’s
key constituents and corporate brands using IMG’s global resources, influence and
expertise - in order to find, nurture and sustain young designers wishing to live and
work in London – although most of what you will read here is equally applicable to
setting up a business in other cities. Since Fashion Fringe’s inception in 2003 we
have realised that, although the talent has to look after itself, the business side can
be made much less scary if you can get advice from the experts in the field. As a
result, each year our 4 Finalists are given an in-depth month-long induction period
during which advisors as diverse as American Express, DHL, L’Oréal Paris, e-tailers
such as NET-A-PORTER.COM, journalists and show producers tell them the
fashion story from their specialist point of view. It is an invaluable experience, not
just for the eventual winner, but for all 4.
Why? Because when you first set off on your own you will almost certainly be very
close to a one-man band, getting help when you can afford it but doing most things
by yourself – or with a few friends. And you will soon learn that there is a lot more
to setting up a fashion business than pretty drawings and lovely fabrics, or turning
to a tutor to solve your problems. You are the tutor now. And not only that, at
times, you will find yourself called upon to become a director, business manager,
PR and a psychiatrist as you persuade and cajole people into helping you. All roles
are just as important for a successful business as designing.
