“Some years ago someone told me... ’Good press is always
3
fabulous, but good sales pay the rent and are therefore equally
thrilling!!’ So true!... as one of the most exciting things, still, is to see
someone you don’t know, never met, and isn’t a friend of a friend,
wearing something of yours and looking fabulous. Even better if they
purchased it on the other side of the world!... Still such a thrill and almost more
satisfying than any editorial!”

KNOWLEDGE
“The design industry is about aspirations and we all need to aspire to
THE goals that on the face of it seem unachievable. The first lesson I learnt
was to listen to my instincts and the second was to follow them. One
of the other more valuable things I have learned is that whatever you
are doing you should do with passion or not at all. Personally, I think
it’s important to keep your feet on solid ground, to live with your eyes
wide, your mind open, always ready to learn and to dream big dreams.”

“Understand what your long term goals are. Understand what it is
about your work that is individual to you, then you can actually
harbour it and grow. Also work with people who are good at what
they do (things you cannot do yourself): a good accountant, a really
good lawyer. Trust yourself. In terms of advice, follow very little. Learn
to trust your own instinct; what other people advise is generally
obvious or incorrect. (Feel free to ignore the advice above!!)”
GARETH PUGH
“The way it happened for me was very odd. I was more or less just
out of college, and doing a few things here and there. I can’t recall
the amount of times spent on the phone to my mam and dad trying
to convince them that all this free work, all these favours I was doing,
would actually amount to something tangible.
There’s always things you wish you’d never done, or things you
would do differently, but the truth is that you need to make these mistakes in order to
grow. I do wish I’d been warned about the business side though - the VAT, the tax
returns, the millions of receipts, the spreadsheets, the invoices, the rent, the bills – the
sheer scale of it all - it sometimes outweighs the creative side of things, but the two
things are such an integral part of each other it’s a price you have to pay. I would have
loved to have started with some sort of business manager, someone my age who
could sew and do the all nighters with me, but someone who’s passion lies in making
the business side work- it’s a full time job in itself!
