fashion happen. They didn’t exist as named personalities until the early eighties and
even then worked entirely on magazines. It wasn’t until the late eighties when
supermodels began to drive fashion that stylists became personalities – and, in

some cases, characters in their own right, although, unlike photographers and
models their names were unknown to the public. Only a few designers employed
them to help style their shows at that point. But, as designers were expected to
take responsibility for more and more lines, the need to use someone from outside,
someone not directly involved with the hands-on daily business of creating the
clothes, arose in order to bring a fresh eye and a clear, unemotional view of how to

project the clothes to their best advantage on the runway. From there, it was a
short step to the current position where top stylists are involved in the evolution of
a collection even before much of it is made. And, interestingly, the list of the very

top stylists include a high proportion of British women.

This has been the most basic of guiding suggestions, more about engendering a
way of thinking than answering all the questions from a world as diverse as fashion,
no guide can do that. Being a fashion designer is a tough call, but new people make
