Progressive
long passing challenges
Why do it?
• To focus on quality and concentration
• To recognise that a ‘good pass’ relies on the contribution of move than just the passer
• To instil a element of competition in technique training
How to do it?
• Teams of 4 compete against other each other
• STAGE 1. A passes a driven pass across to B and C. B or C have to pass the ball
(in the air) first time to their partner. The team scores points for achieving this.
• STAGE 2. As above, but B or C must be able to control the ball in the air before
passing the ball (in the air) to their partner. Once again this is how the team
scores points.
• STAGE 3. As above, but now the ball must be played back to A and D in the air
for them to catch (at no time must the ball touch the ground!).
Don’t just copy it, improve it
• Insist on how the ball should be passed from B to C (e.g. use of the chest)
• Put the players in an area which they are not allowed to move from.
