The 2 x 2 formation is very simple and
doesn’t require too much movement
from the players. The two in the back
are in charge for the defence, while
the two on the front for the attack.
Although a simple formation it doesn’t
mean that in certain moments of the
game, high level teams won’t use the
2 x 2
The 2x2 is more of a defensive
formation. Its main characteristic is to
restrict goal scoring opportunities for
the opponents and to use the counter
attack.

use the 2 x 2 system will use zone
marking, with the players responsible
of certain areas to cover.
The 2 x 2 system can be used in four
different situations defensively.
• Full pressure
• Half pressure,
• Half court and
• Against the GK.
However, most of the
teams, when opting for the
2x2 will mark half court.
