Gary Spedding dies after
short illness
Stainless Threaded Fasteners has announced, with regret, that Gary Spedding passed away during
the evening of the 4th September, after a short illness.
Gary began his career in stainless steel fasteners in 1973 with Hasselfors UK Ltd, progressing through a
number of roles in both sales and administration.
In 1982 Gary joined Serco Ryan as Manchester branch manager, at the beginning of a period of
tremendous growth. Following acquisition by Lilleshall Plc, Gary joined the board in 1989 as northern area
sales director. Throughout this period Gary represented Serco at the ASFAD stainless steel association
serving as treasurer for a period.
In 1996, having been approached by the Charles Baynes Group, Gary established Precision Stainless
Fasteners in Chesterfield, alongside Stainless Steel Fasteners Ltd and Andrews Fasteners Ltd. By 2000 PSF
had grown to be the third largest stainless steel fastener distributor in the UK. In 2001, following a change
of holding company focus, Gary negotiated the sale of PSF to Apex Stainless Fasteners, and a
management buy out, along with three colleagues, of Andrews Fasteners Ltd, for which he became joint
managing director.
In 2003, Gary moved to Apex Stainless Fasteners as operations director, based in Bilston, with
responsibility for the central operations function and, once again, Precision Stainless Fasteners, now based
in Leeds.
At the beginning of 2006 Gary joined Stainless Threaded Fasteners, a member of SRB Ltd, as business
development manager. In the following two and three quarter years as a senior member of the
management team, Gary travelled extensively on behalf of the export department, developed a new web
site for the group companies and established STF Marine.
A keen golfer, with an interest in most sports and a life long Manchester United fan, Gary was always
fun to be around. A devoted family man, Gary leaves his wife Wendy and their two sons Andrew and
Peter.
Sincere condolences go to Gary’s family, friends and many colleagues throughout the industry on this
sad loss.
Phoenix from the flames…
continued
After a 12 month wait, construction of Carona Reuter Industrials new warehouse and offices in
Dagenham has finally started.
As you may remember in July 2007 an arson attack on the building next door to CRI totally destroyed its
warehouse and all the stock inside the
building.
Fortunately after only 4 days, Carona
Reuter was able to move into temporary
premises only 500m away in the same road,
enabling it to carry on with business as
usual.
“If everything goes to plan we should be
back in the new building by the end of
October 2008. It has been a testing year, but
we are hopeful that the growth we have
achieved in 2007/2008 will continue into
2008/2009,” commented Nick Roberts,
director.
