“InterfaceFLOR carpets are not only very high in quality, the company takes developing
sustainable products very seriously” says Lai. “The carpets we selected have low-
VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) and recycled content. In hong Kong, InterfaceFLOR
provided a take-back programme for our existing carpets. All these helped us achieve
LEED certification in many ways.”
Through such efforts hOK is looking to reduce 50 per cent of its emissions by 2010,
and it has a vigorous system in place to measure and track its efforts. This includes
collecting data on green operation policies, employee transport and shipping practices,
and using carbon offsets. In addition to launching an awareness campaign through
firm-wide events, the company compiled its first carbon footprint report for every hOK
office worldwide in 2007.
“Just within a few months of moving into our renovated offices,
we were able to demonstrate between 28 to 50 per cent energy
savings on electricity alone,” says greenaway. “In addition, the choice of low-
emitting materials and products used resulted in a definite improvement in air quality
– confirmed by some of the air quality testing conducted prior to occupying our new
spaces. All proving that a green interior is the way forward.”
