Building on two decades of expertise and experience in
sustainability, HOK is leading the way in eco-friendly,
high performance designs. By Lalitha Naidu
commitment to stunning yet sustainable designs – that’s one of
the many attributes that has long set recognised architectural
firm hOK International apart from its competitors.
hOK was the first major design practice to join the U.S. green
Building Council back in the 1990s. Not only did the company
help develop the first Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design (LEED) rating system, it now has over 570 LEED
Accredited Professionals in its ranks.
In the last 20 years, it has put its distinct stamp – one that is guided by such ideals
as enhancing building longevity, using natural and environment-friendly strategies and
promoting liveable communities – on projects, big and small, all over the world. Some
of its works include San Mateo Sheriffs Building in California, USA, which was named
one of the top ten green buildings by the American Institute of Architects Committee
on the Environment in 2003, hSBC Mexico headquarters in Mexico City, and Winrock
International headquarters in Arkansas, the first LEED gold certified office building in
the state.
It is no surprise then that when it comes to its own offices, the company practises what
it preaches. It consistently pulls out all the stops to showcase innovative green design.
“hOK has an internal policy, which has been in effect for many years, that all our new
offices must be LEED certified,” says Nicola greenaway, Director, hOK Singapore. “This
is part of our greater commitment to measurably reduce our environmental impact.”
And thus far, it has followed through. hOK Singapore recently earned LEED Silver
certification, becoming the first LEED-certified project in the country. hOK Shanghai
and hOK Beijing were certified LEED Silver and gold respectively, while the hong Kong
office is currently awaiting certification.
For these newly renovated offices, the design brief was simple – create a
sustainable work environment for employees to collaborate
effectively to produce great work. As designers as well as owners of the
hOK Singapore
project, the company’s key considerations in terms of the look and feel of the office
