the goal as InterfaceFLOR looks beyond
its ranks to spread the sustainability

hanging set ways isn’t easy. That,
however, didn’t stop InterfaceFLOR’s
Founder and Chairman Ray Anderson
from overhauling his highly successful,
21-year-old company in 1994. The
triggers for change were a book and
a question that grew more audible
each day: What is InterfaceFLOR
doing for the environment?
While preparing to address the company’s environmental
position at an internal meeting, he came across Paul Hawken’s
The Ecology Of Commerce. It proved to be a defining moment both
personally and professionally. “I was running a company
that was plundering the earth,” says Anderson,
“I thought, ‘some day people like me will be put in jail’.”
So at the age of 60, when most people are reaping the rewards
of hard-earned success, Anderson mapped out a new journey
towards sustainability for InterfaceFLOR with the same vigour
and entrepreneurial spirit that made the company one of the
world’s largest and most established manufacturers of carpet
tiles. Every creative, manufacturing and building decision the
company made henceforth was driven by a new internal vision
that came to be known as Mission Zero™ – the promise to
eliminate any negative impact InterfaceFLOR has on the
environment by 2020.
The goal was to steer the company away from petrochemicals-
intensive operations to one that would take nothing from
the earth that isn’t naturally and rapidly renewable. Waste
