contemporary commercial interiors. It’s an ideal
choice for businesses that like the convenience
and flexibility that carpet tiles offer, but want
something that’s high-quality and luxurious.
‘Many businesses opt for flooring in a single
colour, perhaps using a contrasting shade to sepa-
rate areas in an open-plan office. But some com-
panies, like First Direct, want to take advantage
of our in-house design expertise, which can be
effectively used to create innovative floorcovering
designs and layouts.’
Available in nine urban-inspired colours, Align-
ment is a strong, hardwearing carpet tile made
from 100 per cent solution dyed Antron yarn.
Manufactured on Bonar Floors’ CMC tufting ma-
chine, new techniques and subtly shaded multiple
yarns means a linear appearance can be created
when the carpet tiles are laid broadloom.
Alignment carpet tiles have a 10 year guaran-
tee, which can be extended to 15 years if the cus-
tomers opts for SOFTbac® – a secondary backing
designed to provide additional underfoot comfort,
performance longevity and improved sound and
thermal insulation.
Keith Hall, technical director, Desso Limited
offered his thoughts on bespoke carpeting:
‘Carpet manufacturers need to be able to
respond quickly to changes in fashion and the
varied demands of clients. This is made easier
for those manufacturers who have the most up
to date machinery available, accommodating all
types of construction, including tufted, Axminster
and Wilton.
‘Historically, in the carpet tile market, manufac-
turers have often been asked to produce carpet
tiles which provide a broadloom effect. Generally,
the thinking behind this is to create a consistent
floor finish more readily associated with broad-
loom products, combined with the flexibility that
a carpet tile offers in relation to access to under
floor services. The bespoke design developed in
these cases is usually created by printing special
colours/designs to individual tiles.
‘More recently there has been significant move-
ment away from this to create floors with carpet
tiles specially designed to create personalised,
flexible floor layouts, as opposed to individually
designed tiles. This is achieved by the carpet fitter
using varied tile positioning at the time of installa-
tion as instructed by the specification. This design
approach has also led to the development of
random-lay products, which not only create varied
aesthetic options but also a practical solution for
the facilities or premises manager when lifting
and relaying tiles moved for service requirements.
‘Creative elements within the main floor area
can also be enhanced by special laser-cut carpet
tiles, often creating company logos for recep-
tions, corridors and breakout areas. This offers
an effective and economical method for producing
striking custom designs.
‘Commercial specifiers may also require a
fully bespoke facility for prestigious areas, and
