In a world where everything is standardised, it is impos-
sible to stand out from the crowd, and being unique is
not easy. Limitation of creative freedom is one of the
most frustrating aspects of choosing a floorcovering
as most people don’t want to settle for something that
every other Tom, Dick and Harry has.
Defying convention and rebelling against the masses is
what bespoke carpeting does best.
With it’s endless flexibility, accessibility and potential, the
bespoke carpeting has paved a new path for flooring ena-
bling the creation of individual, personalised products.
Not only does it contribute massively to brand and
business identity, it attributes personality, fashionabililty
and most of all, it injects a sense of fun and freedom.
Many applications, from banks to bars, want to gener-
ate a positive atmosphere to provoke and foster a suc-
cessful, driven working environment or a relaxed, stylish
entertainment venue.
Everything and anything can be incorporated into
bespoke carpeting, sizes can be tailored, colours can
be matched, logos can be incorporated and designs can
be utilised that otherwise would never see the drawing
board let alone the light of day.

floors.
First Direct, HSBC’s 24-hour telephone banking divi-
sion, has created a funky, bright working environment at
its Leeds call centre with the use of Tessera carpet tiles
from Bonar Floors.
Purpose built in 1994, First Direct’s call centre is a
large, open plan office housing the company’s telesales
personnel. When the building was recently refurbished,
First Direct decided to make the interior bright and
upbeat – with the aim of creating a positive, motivational
and fun working environment.
As part of the refurbishment project managed by
Carillion, 6,500m
2
of Tessera’s Alignment carpet tiles in
Nucleus were laid, along with 300 bespoke logos. Using
specialist machinery, the carpet tiles were laser-cut and
the logos inserted – which included toilet signs, hop
scotches, fire exit signs and feet – as the flooring was
being laid. To make the logos even brighter and more
noticeable, the dark, dramatic Alignment carpet tiles
were contrasted with Acrobat carpet tiles in striking
Firecracker red.
Alignment’s luxurious, rich, cleverly textured cut and
loop pile has given First Direct the quality finish it was
looking for, but meanwhile, a fun, striking environment
has been created.
Shirley Hill, from First Direct said: ‘The refurbishment
of our Leeds building gave us an opportunity to brighten
up the interior, and do something original and exciting.
The inclusion of the floor logos has had a really positive
impact on our people and visitors – the hop scotch, for
example, tells everyone that we are a fun and cheerful
company and has proved very popular. The flooring itself
is very contemporary – which gives our call centre a
quality, modern image in line with our black and white
banking.’
