An ‘Italian Job’ with a difference
It was for a double act of Golden Coast and Olympic Pools of Norwich
an “ Italian Job” with a difference…
The task was to transform a clay-pit ‘pool’ to a fully lined ‘natural’
swimming pool at a holiday villa in the northern Italian mountain town
of Mombarcaro.
It was completed by Olympic Pools of Norwich, with Golden Coast
providing the twin Lacron filters and all associated pipe work.
The project required the original clay-pit pool to be smoothed out
and re-sculptured by hand, including incorporating a Roman End bay
with steps, before the base and wall surfaces were lined with hessian
and a final glass-fibre layer.
Lee Cutting and colleagues from Olympic took all the equipment
needed for the project, including a pre-fabricated purpose-built plant
room, by road from the UK in one load. Remaining on-site for a week,
they carried out the necessary preparatory site work and laid a Olympic Pools in Norwich and Golden Coast worked as a team to

They also erected and fitted out the plant room adjacent to the pool.
Initial work on the project started in April with the new pool,
measuring 125ft x 50ft and incorporating a walk-in ‘beach’ sloping to
just over seven feet at its deep end, being completed and ready to be
filled within a fortnight. The entire site is currently being landscaped
to blend into the villa’s natural surroundings.
Although the pool project was completed within the time frame, Lee
remained in Italy for a second week following a request from the client
to install two Clearwater salt water units and other equipment for the
villa. Again, all the equipment was driven the 1,300 miles by one of his
colleagues in 36 hours after joining the ferry – now that’s service!
“Turning what had basically been a pond into a ‘natural’ swimming
pool was a fascinating project to work on,” said Lee Cutting.
“Knowing that everything we required would be available, especially
when the client asked for the salt water units, made our job that
much easier.”
Following completion of the work, the client awarded Olympic another
similar project for a villa in Austria, with a promise of more to come.
