CHLORINE resistant parasites such as
Cryptosporidium can be found in water
supplies and can thrive in swimming pools
and water play areas such as splash pads.
Such was the impact of Ultraviolet
treatment in combating this problem in

Gripping stuff for kids
CAMPING DE PAAL, one of Europe’s largest camping sites, had a problem with
their large indoor pool and children’s wet play area. The problem was that there
was a large area of steel floor grating, where children play with water toys, which
was very difficult to walk on and slippery.
To overcome the problem, rubber tiles were laid but, within six months, these
had deteriorated, and clogged the water filters, not only because of the pool’s
chlorine but also because of wear by the metal below. An alternative of using hard
wearing and chlorine resistant vinyl matting was proposed.
Open grid
Plastic Extruders manufactured a hybrid product that had the required
performance criteria for this application. The self-supporting 15mm thick matting
(pictured above) has an open grid through which the water is easily dissipated
and which contours easily over the steel grating below.
The matting has an open grid construction which helps water drain away easily
in all directions. This means that the embossed surface remains relatively dry and
therefore slip resistant. The matting is comfortable to stand on while the anti-
bacterial and anti-fungal additives ensure it is hygienic for bare feet. Because the
matting is supplied in 10m roll format, a large area can be covered with one piece
and the number of seams reduced.
