performances.
Eugene has said that on their
most recent album, released last year,
Super Taranta, “everything has been
taken to the next level.” Reviews are
anything but ambivalent. Some have
called it “exhausting,” while others said
“impassioned,” “wise” and “one of the
best albums of the decade.” Previous
albums, Gypsy Punks, East Infection,
Multi Contra Kulti vs. Irony, have had
music critics gasping at their originality.
Life at its fullest and wildest and
most conflicted is what Gogol Bordello
embodies. In Ultimate, Hutz reminds us
to seize the day and make the most out
of our lives: If we are here not to do
what you and I wanna do, and go
forever crazy with it, why the hell are
we even here?
What is most refreshing about
the band is their uncensored
openness. They aren’t afraid to
criticize globalization or call Americans
“red necks”, but don’t think them
misanthropic. In the final note,
they are exuberantly grateful and
ready to celebrate the whole of the
mess that is life .
But even all the garbage they pour
over our eyes does not prevent us from
living the most magical of lives – Gogol
Bordello.
