STATISTICS
European sales of semiconductors grew
4% year on year in May
EUROPEAN sales for semiconductors in
May grew more than 4% in dollars
compared to the same month in 2007, the
World Semiconductor Trade Statistics
(WSTS) reported. However, data on sales
show a slight decrease in May from April
on a three month rolling average,
following a trend registered also in Japan.
In Europe, positive growth rates were
observed for some of the main product
categories on a three month rolling
average, in particular optoelectronics,
sensor actuators and digital signal
processors.
Sales for memories also grew in May:
notably DRAMs returned to a positive
growth, recording a 5% increase. Sales of
NOR Flash Memories showed a positive
trend, while figures related to trends in
sales of discretes were almost flat on a
three month rolling basis. On the negative
side, sales for Microprocessors have
decreased by 6%.
Looking at application specific chips,
MOS Logic used in communications
contributed mostly to the growth in May
on a three month rolling average (+8%),
due to the good performance of the
mobile phones market.
More in detail, European
semiconductor sales in May 2008
amounted to US$ 3.408 billion according
to WSTS, down 0.3% versus the previous
month.
This corresponds to an increase of
4.4% compared to the same month last
year. On an YTD basis semiconductor
sales increased by 2.7% versus the same
period in the year 2007.
The exchange rate of the Euro
compared to the US dollar holds its
impact on the growth data at record
levels. Measured in Euro, semiconductor
sales in May 2008 were 2.187 billion
Euros, down 2.1% on previous month and
down 10.2% versus the same month a
year ago.
On an YTD basis semiconductor sales
showed a decline of 10.6% versus the
same period in the year 2007.
On a worldwide basis, semiconductor
sales in May 2008 were US$ 21.833
billion, up 2.8% versus the previous
month. This results in an increase of
7.5% versus the same month in 2007 and
on an YTD basis it results in an increase
of 5.3%.
