J.K. PLACE, FLORENCE
You’re in Florence, so you want it to say “Florence” but at the same time you
don’t want it to say “Grandma”. Welcome to J.K. Place. Up the ancient stairs
past antique statuary and pictures and into maybe the salon with its funky
zebra-print footstools and blazing fire under industrial-looking, angle-poise
lamps; or one of the bedrooms, steeped in history but with everything the
21st century luxury hunter could desire in terms of flat-screens and pristine
fabrics – all with great rooftop views over the city. It’s a tricky juggling act –
retaining the history of a hotel while giving it an injection of “right-here-right-
now” – but with skills like this J.K. (whoever he is) should join the circus.
2 nights from £425 p.p. in a J.K. Classic Room on a bed & breakfast basis
including flights. Transfers extra.
duoMo HOTEL, RIMINI
You have literally never seen anything like the duoMo hotel & noMi club…the
club with rooms designed by Ron Arad. It’s like Barbarella’s love nest only
updated to a new millennium to give a real glimpse of the future. In short, it’s
eye-popping. From the flipper-like doors, past the huge reflective sculptures
in the lobby, to the rooms with their round windows; from the state-of-the-
art “pod” bathrooms through to beds which sometimes look like they’ve
fallen off a space-craft. No surprise then that the noMi restaurant/bar/club,
with its huge polished metal columns, is the coolest spot in town; the facilities
are up-to-date and beyond and the weekly beach parties are the stuff of
legend. If this is the future, count us in!
5 nights from £380 p.p. in an Urban Room on a bed & breakfast basis
including flights. Transfers extra.
CASA ANGELINA LIFESTYLE HOTEL, AMALFI
Staying at the Casa Angelina, perched high on a cliff overlooking the
Mediterranean, is like having a holiday in the sky. The perfect white hotel,
with its perfect white terraces and balconies suspended over the sea, opens
up on perfect white-on-white rooms where clean, modern lines and famous
design furniture carry on the tradition of luxury on the Amalfi Coast. With a
beautiful outdoor pool (sea views: check), an indoor pool, fitness and
wellness centre (offering Pilates among other things) and a terrace restaurant
that prides itself on turning out some of the best in gastronomy on this
stretch of coastline, it’s a very complete package. And a very beautiful one –
with plenty of original artworks – as befits this, one of the most beautiful parts
of the Med.
5 nights from £550 p.p. in a Standard Room including flights. Meals and
transfers extra.
