THE BULGARI HOTEL, MILAN

Sandwiched between the Spanish Steps and the Piazza del Popolo, Hotel de
Russie seeps masculine opulence. Balmy greens, yellows and greys sweep
through the 122-roomed hotel, with each and every room tweaked, plucked
and refined to within an inch of its life. There’s a robust air to the place which
makes you think it could withstand 30 on the Richter, with hardy yet exquisite
detailing floor to ceiling. The Stravinski Bar (try the de Russie Martini, served
with caviar) is popular with shrewd locals, whilst the ambrosial terraced
gardens – Jardin de Russie – are a zillion miles away from the hustle and
bumper-to-bumper bustle of Rome at large and act as an epic dining room,
weather permitting (it usually is).
