MORRISON, DUBLIN
John Rocha is responsible for taking this grand Georgian mansion and turning
it into the hottest hotel in Dublin, from the drama of the entrance to rooms
of cream and black with the sort of clever lighting that transforms a great
room into a location. The geography doesn’t hurt: a five-minute walk from
everywhere you need to be, it actually overlooks the Liffey. And the hotel
hammers home why Rocha is one of the best designers out there: cool and
contemporary against the grandness of the building itself, with a typically Irish
feeling of welcome. Add Halo, a current favourite with Dublin restaurant
buffs, plus a couple of A-list bars and we’re talking about the place to be in
the whole of Ireland.
2 nights from £285 p.p. in a Superior Room on a bed & breakfast basis
including flights. Transfers extra.
THE DYLAN, AMSTERDAM
When Beyoncé is in town, this is where she likes to stay. And she’s no fool.
Beautifully dark and cosy with its own courtyard and almost trademark bold
striped fabric in many of the rooms (courtesy of Anouska Hempel), The
Dylan – formerly Blakes – has its own thing going on. Based in a 17th century
merchant’s house right on the Keizersgracht (which is good!), it has its fair
share of history. But the colonial/Asian styling is very contemporary while the
Oriental rooms often overlook canals to give a real sense of place. Grab a
hotel bicycle and soft pedal to any of the sights within easy reach, then back
to that expensively snooky atmosphere and dinner in the hotel restaurant –
one of the best in town.

987 PRAGUE HOTEL, PRAGUE
How very appropriate that this most modern of hotels – housed in a beautiful
antique building – should straddle the old and new parts of what is generally
recognised to be a contender for the loveliest town in the world. The
interior is brand new and takes modern design – in warm browns and beiges
– to whole new heights, with the grandness of its salons and the
contemporary feel of its furniture somehow creating a cosy and comfortable
atmosphere. In the rooms, look out for the interactive light displays, which
allow you to create whatever vibe you’re in the mood for, the orange lacquer
touches around the bathrooms…In short, the sheer imagination that has
been used to turn this into one of the funkiest destinations in Eastern Europe.
2 nights from £190 p.p. in a Superior Room on a bed & breakfast basis
including flights. Transfers extra.
