institute.
Today, the key research topics of the AIP are cosmic magnetic fields and extragalac-
tic astrophysics. A considerable part of the institute’s efforts aim at the development
of new research technology in the fields of spectroscopy, robotic telescopes, and e-
science.
The institute is a partner in the world’s largest optical telescope project, LBT, and
develops instrumentation for several observatories at the cutting-edge of technolo-

Leibniz Institutes have collected 34 million Euro from the European Union, 41 million
Euro from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation, DFG)
and 46 million Euro from industry co-operations in 2006. The total budget of all Leibniz
Institutes amounts to more than one billion Euro.
Leibniz Institutes maintain 2.200 major national and 1.300 international scientific coop-
erations. About 2.300 foreign scientists come for temporary work at Leibniz Institutes
each year.
