University of Applied Sciences Wildau (UASW)
Profi le
University of Applied Sciences Wildau (UASW) is the largest university of applied sciences in Brandenburg and one of the key factors in Science and
Economy in the capital region Berlin-Brandenburg. 3500 German and international students are receiving education in 20 diff erent departments,
6 distance learning tracks and 2 MBA tracks.
The university took over the leadership in applied research and development among all 163 universities of applied sciences of Germany in the year
2001 and was able to keep this position until today. This position could be obtained by the research results, created by the professors, scientifi c staff
and students in industry- funded and government-funded projects and especially by innovative concepts in integrated teaching and research.
Students
The university has adapted in recent years to the new bachelor and master scheme following the Bologna process. Newly created and highly
innovative departments like air-traffi c technologies & logistics, telematics, photonics, biosystems technologies & bioinformatics, european
management as well as traditional departments like process technology, physical technologies, machine construction, economical engineering,
business administration, economy and law, administration and law are off ering the Bachelor and Master degree. Only a few of them are still in
transition to the new system.
The request of young people to study at the university has increased signifi cantly over recent years. In the winter semester 2006/2007 the
university observed again a new record with 2755 new applications, an increase by 11.7% over the previous year, thus leading to a 1 out of 4
selection process among the applicants by a performance-oriented Numerus Clausus. Many applicants were especially seen in the areas logistics,
economic engineering, biosystems technologies & bioinformatics, telematics, business administration and engineering.
Research and Development
In 2004/2005 the WIT, Wildau Institute of Technology founded an international graduate school, supporting research and development at the
university, as well as initiating new education tracks like the master of science in aviation management running completely in English language.
The university is connected to small, medium-size companies but also to large global enterprises via a network of cooperation programs for
transfer of knowledge and technologies. Several international networks are connecting the universities to other universities in Finland, France,
Macedonia, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Sweden, UK, Romania, Croatia as well as to the US.
Over the last 6 years the university could increase steadily its distance to the other 163 universities of applied sciences in Germany with respect
to external budgets for research projects. From 2005 to 2006 this budget increased by more than 25% from 4 Million Euro to more than 5 Million
Euro. This development is expected to continue in the years 2007 and 2008.
On March 26th, 2007 the university received together with its local environment the label ‘Ort der Ideen’ in the national competition ‘365 Orte
im Land der Ideen’ from president Köhler.
In the area of research and development in natural sciences and technologies the university has a set of key research focus areas, like computer
science (telematics, bioinformatics, business informatics), systems and process technologies (biosystems technologies, surface technologies,
optical technologies, airtraffi c technologies).
An example – the department for biosystems technologies and bioinformatics
The department and the related study course biosystems technologies & bioinformatics was founded 6 years agon in cooperation with the local
biotechnology industry in the framework of Biohytec and with support by the federal government of Germany. The department is distributed in 6
key areas, with 6 full time professors attached: biosystems technologies, microsystems technologies, microbiology, molecular biology, bioinformatics
and computer science (machine learning). In each of the 6 areas courses are off ered to the students in the department, thus after an M.Sc. the
student is educated in systems and sensors hardware, in biochemistry, in biology as well as in computer science, a mixture that is unique also on
global scale.
A large fraction of the M.Sc. students are continuing their education with a Ph.D. program, some of them staying at our department or by
applying at other research centers or universities in Germany and abroad.
Our department has an excellent network in the Berlin-Brandenburg Life-Science region, to mention here e.g. the cooperation contract between
University of Potsdam, TFHW and Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering for work in joint research projects, connecting science with
industry and education of students, including also post-gradual education, signed in October 2007.
In March 2007 our university and our department signed a framework cooperation contract with Philips Research Europe in the area of disease-
oriented bioinformatics.
In June 2007 Philips decided to sponsor 2 Ph.D. candidates in a 4-year Ph.D. program in bioinformatics. A joint UASW-Philips Research transfer
laboratory was founded and opened on November 1st 2007.
