CELLENCE INITIA
The Research Centre for Biological Signalling Studies (bioss) at the University of Freiburg (Germany) provides
excellent research opportunities to study the mechanisms of biological signalling. The central research idea
of bioss is to initiate and promote a dialectic process between scientists using analytical (dissecting) and
synthetical (rebuilding) approaches in signalling research in an interdisciplinary strategy together with the
Max Planck Institute for Immunobiology and the Fraunhofer Institute for Physical Measurement Techniques.
The research centre is funded by the Excellence Initiative of the German Federal and State Governments
and includes state-of-the art platforms for genomics, proteomics and imaging.
The following positions shall be filled in 2008. All positions will be well equipped with personnel, consumables and instruments. Details
of the positions will be described in further announcements and will be updated at
www.bioss.uni-freiburg.de.

Professorship (W3) „Functional Proteomics“
Field: Proteomic analysis of structure and dynamics of signalling complexes/pathways and networks. Research topics include diffe-
rential identification of proteins in complex mixtures, protein modifications and quantitative mass spectrometry.
Professorship (W3) „Structural Biology“
Field: Characterisation of structure and function of multiprotein machineries and signalling molecules. Research topics include func-
tional specificity and coupling of proteins in intracellular networks.
Junior Research Group „Molecular Imaging“
Field: Spatio-temporal dynamics of proteins and protein complexes during intracellular signalling. Research topics include monito-
ring protein-protein interactions by fluorescence-based techniques and ‚single molecule microscopy‘.
Professorship (W3) „Signalling Microenvironments“
Field: Interdisciplinary research to generate biocompatible functionalized artificial microenvironments. Research topics include syn-
thesis and engineering of 3D structured environments with active signalling molecules in immobilized state or added continuously,
and application in signalling research.
Junior Research Group „Signalling and Organogenesis“
Field: Mechanisms of 3D organisation of cells into organs. Research topics include signalling mechanisms controlling organogenesis,
and 3D tissue culture.
Professorship (W3) „Synthetic Biology of Signalling“
Field: intracellular signal transduction and synthetic biology. Research topics include the study of the dynamic behaviour and organi-
sation of signalling systems with synthetic approaches, the analysis and rebuilding of minimal signalling systems, the construction of
protein machines such as signalling switches and detectors
Junior Research Group „Organisms with New Features“
Field: Modern mouse genetics. Research topics include mouse models for human diseases and transgenic organisms with inducible
gene expression.
Junior Research Group „Modelling Protein Dynamics and Intracellular Signalling“
Field: Theoretical biophysics. Research topics include spatio-temporal non-equilibrium diffusion-reaction processes, structure forma-
tion, and information processing in in vivo, in vitro and rebuilt intracellular signalling systems.
