Kiel University is one of the universities that have done extremely well in Germany’s national
excellence initiative. It has been awarded two clusters of excellence and a graduate school.
The »FUTURE OCEAN« cluster of excellence was among last year’s winners.
This cluster investigates the changes in the oceans including risks and oppor-
CELLENCE INITIA
tunities. The scope of research covers fields such as ocean acidification,
marine genetic and microbiological resources and gas hydrates as possible
energy sources of the future. These fields are to be subjected to integrative,
comprehensive and interdisciplinary investigations using marine biological,
economic, legal and medical approaches as well as innovative technologies
in oceanic observation. Kiel University cooperated closely with the Leibniz
Institute of Marine Sciences (IFM-GEOMAR) to develop this cluster, for which
the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) and the Muthesius Academy of
Fine Arts have also been attracted as partners.

»INFLAMMATION AT INTERFACES«, the second cluster of excellence, brings
TLIGHT ON GERMANY – EX
together medicine, biology, nutritional and agricultural sciences to investigate
how skin and mucous membranes of humans and animals react to process-
SPO
es of inflammation. Some 130 scientists will join forces to identify the disor-
ders at biological barriers. Research will include neurological and immunol-
ogical topics, cancer research, nutrition research and genetic adaptations of
pathogens.Thiscluster of excellence is a joint effort of the Christian-Albrechts-
Universität zu Kiel and Lübeck University, together with the Research Center
Borstel.

The »HUMAN DEVELOPMENT IN LANDSCAPES« graduate school devotes
itself to interdisciplinary research into the interaction of humans and their
environment. Research focuses on landscape as a dynamic space of social,
cultural and ecological significance and brings together archaeologists, cli-
matologists, social scientists and historians. Interdisciplinary PhD theses will
spur on progress in fields such as archaeo-informatics and the cultural an-
thropological interpretation of materialistic culture. The school intends to test
a wide variety of approaches and to combine methods and mindsets that
have been worlds apart until now. In this graduate school, Kiel University
is cooperating with the Leibniz Institute for Science Education (IPN) and the
Archaeological State Museum Schleswig-Holstein.

With its new graduate school »HUMAN DEVELOPMENT IN LANDSCAPES« Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel expands its research and
educational activities under the focus »Humans and Environmental Change«. The graduate school is funded by the excellence initiative
programme of the German Government and supported by the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein. Therefore the CAU offers
twenty doctoral stipends for outstanding young researchers.
Grants of 1200€/month will be provided for two years with the option of extension for a further year. Eligible candidates must hold an out-
standing university degree in one of the fields relevant to the theme, covering the multidisciplinary scope of »Human Development in Land-
7
scapes« (further information:
www.uni-kiel.de/landscapes). The graduate programme is jointly offered by the Faculties of Humanities, Mathe-
matics and Natural Sciences, Medicine, and Agricultural and Nutritional Sciences. Thus orientation of PhD projects should be interdiscipli-
nary, and supervision will be provided at an inter-faculty level. Candidates are invited to submit proposals for PhD research projects that should
address one of the following themes: »Society and Reflection«, »Social Space and Landscape«, »Mobility, Innovation and Change«.
