THE UNIVERSITY OF WÜRZBURG is a flourishing center of science and education, recently ranked among the Top Ten Universities in
Germany. It is one of the oldest universities in the country, located in the heart of Germany and cl ose to Frankfurt. The charm of the
old Franconian town and its mild climate provide a pleasant and stimulating ambience for more than 2 0 000 students and 3000
scientists. The University offers a wide spectrum of subjects in natural sciences, life sciences, hu manities and social sciences. It is

The Rudolf Virchow Center is one of the first three “Centers of Excellence”, established by the German Research Foundation (D FG) in 2001. Its
special structure grants junior researchers early independence and senior scientists the freedom to work on high-risk projects, lending the
Center an outstanding reputation in biomedical research (www.rudolf-virchow-zentrum.de).
The Research Center for Infectious Diseases combines basic and clinical research on infectious diseases. Its interdisciplinary work involves
a large number of research groups - working in the university clinics and the Faculties of Medicine, Biology, Physics, Pharmacology
and Chemistry. Four independent young investigator groups work in the areas of parasitic, fungal and bacterial infections
(www.infektionsforschung.uni-wuerzburg.de).
SCIENCE S
The Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen Research Center for Complex Material Systems unites internationally leading scientists from physics, chemistry,
pharmacology and biology. The synthesis of novel inorganic and organic materials, nanofabrication te chnologies and devices with tailored
properties are investigated by a wide variety of experimental techniques and theoretical analyses regar ding fundamental issues and
applications (www.roentgen-zentrum.uni-wuerzburg.de).
GRADUATE SCHOOL S
Convinced that doctoral students are an important driving force for research, the University of Würz burg was among the first in Germany to
establish Graduate Schools. Interdisciplinary research training is key to the Graduate School of Life Sciences, which is among the few in the
country supported by the Excellence Initiative. In parallel, the University is investing substantial ly in a scholarship program for the Graduate
School of Humanities (www.graduateschools.uni-wuerzburg.de).

A New Take on Translational Research
LIFE & BRAIN represents a novel R&D concept which integrates
academic research and product development under one roof.
Our mission is to discover and develop novel strategies
for the diagnosis and therapy of nervous system
disorders. Our platforms feature a unique set
of expertise in stem cell technology, geno-
mics, transgenics and neurocognition.
