Editorial Design
Books, magazines, newspapers, periodicals, journals
—published works on paper are carriers for some of the
most significant information and imagery we consume,
be it a breaking news story from the other side of
the planet, a humble cinema listing or a mind-altering
fix of artistic expression. This month’s Special Report is
dedicated to the editorial world, highlighting moments of
creation that inspire, intrigue or offer a window on history.
Byggstudio in Stockholm inspired the bibliophilic font on our cover
and designed the deluge of books that decorates this spread. The
trio of designers (Hanna Nilsson, Markus Bergström and Sofia
Østerhus) not only devise art direction and design for its clients but
also pursue interior design and a number of ongoing social projects.
These include Vintage Plant Store, where you can swap, sell and buy
cuttings and plants with a family tree, with each plant’s story
mapped out on
www.vintageplant.net, complete with documentary
photos. The inclination to tell stories doesn’t stop at Bygg’s personal
projects but infuses its commercial work too, where set design is often
the theatrically motivated starting point for bespoke fonts, identities
and illustrations for clients ranging from Diesel to Iittala.
On pages 59 to 63 of this Special Report, you can also see the illustrations that
Laurent Fétis has made for us, inspired by the classic 70s editorial illustrations by
Charles Raymond and Christopher Foss in The Joy of Sex. Which brings us back
