Politically charged, iconoclastic and often seditious,
collage is a medium that allows its practitioners to
subvert the visual world, mixing it up to create poignant
new messages out of familiar images. While collage
is par for the course today for any computer-savvy
amateur, in the early twentieth century it was a radical
skill practised by artists and designers who sailed close
to the winds of social unrest and the artistic avant-
garde. innovators like Hannah Hoch, George Heartfield
and George Grosz are celebrated this month at the
estorick Collection in North london with its show Cut &
Paste: european Photomontage 1920–1945. a must-see
for any designer with an ounce of political integrity.

if you’re crossing the atlantic early this month, keep
an eye out the plane window for a flock of paper birds.
london-based illustrator Von is keeping relations
sweet between his home town and the Big apple with
an installation called Migration—a billboard-sized
illustration of birds on the wing. the ambitious scheme
started at the truman Breweries in the east end in
august and takes to the sky, heading to New york and
landing on espeis Gallery’s Williamsburg billboard
site on 11 September. Former inhabitants of the space
have included MoMo and WK interact, though
we suspect this might be the most stunning yet.

imagine a beautiful garden in the grounds of an
old power station… follow the path to the bottom of the
garden where you find a glasshouse nurturing, not
hothouse flowers, but a collection of beautiful books.
you’re not dreaming, it’s a real bookshop that’s
opening this month at the Wapping Project Gallery in
east london and it’s as much an art installation as
a shopping experience. in the evening, as diners
enjoy the fine dining at Wapping’s restaurant,
the glasshouse bookshop will be visible, lit by a single
lightbulb beneath which writer, Grafik contributer
and bookshop manager lydia Fulton will be sitting
at her desk, tapping away at her typewriter.
dust off those book tokens and pay her a visit.
